I’ve burned out on country. Because it’s so formulaic. It’s like everybody in Nashville has to wear a cowboy hat and sing about God and family. You’d think everybody’s in church, never swears and has no pain that is not shared in a prayer circle. Once upon a time country was where you went for honesty, the real America, now it’s as fake as the botoxed stars in Hollywood, and like those puffed-lip princesses, the songs are indistinguishable. Whereas true greatness is always a bit crooked, in viewpoint and execution, it doesn’t give us what we want, it takes us where we want to be, even though we don’t know it until we get there.

In Memoriam of the Day: Jared Leto marks the 17th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s passing (April 5th) by cosplaying as the Nirvana frontman to the tune of “Pennyroyal Tea.”

Actually, this is from “a short piece of film” Leto shot when he heard a Cobain biopic was in the works (Gus Van Sant’s Last Days?). “I made it to explore the character and explore creative possibilities,” he writes. “I never sent it to the studio or to anyone but thought I’d share it now.”

Follow Up of the Day: Remember that video of George Mason University’s pep band rocking out to a Rage Against The Machine arrangement? Well, this is what the “Killing In The Name Of”/ “Bulls On Parade” mashup they were practicing sounded like at the final home game of the 2010-2011 men’s basketball season.

[deadspin.]

If only every college band would play this, instead of incessantly playing music from star wars.

Radiohead - “Lotus Flower”

The new Radiohead album, King of Limbs, came out a day early! No, it wasn’t leaked by some internet no-good-doers… it was released, by the band, a day early.  Thom Yorke was so excited he started dancing around in a warehouse.  If you’d like to purchase your “copy” you can head over to kingoflimbs.com and get the tracks for only $9.  You might also want to take a look at the “Newspaper Version” of the album which comes with two 10” records and and all kinds of artwork for only $48.  If you do decide to buy the physical album, it will ship on May 9th but you can download the tracks today.

I’ll leave the reviews for later after everybody has had a chance to get a feel for the album but I will say that music lovers everywhere are going to have a busy weekend.
